Summertime Shootings, and their Aftermath, Among Top Local Stories
Many in the Galesburg area were understandably shaken by a deadly shooting in 2011 that made our top local stories of the year.

But there was also resolve and strength in numbers. Residents in the area of the Kiwanis Park shooting that killed 21-year old Jemell Ware rallied just days after the shootings, marching and urging and end to gun violence in the city.

Mayor Sal Garza joined the marchers back in early July, and told the group that rally was a good start toward getting the violence to end.

"We understand, times have always been hard, harder for some of us, even harder for most of us," Garza said. "But here's what we need to understand, today we're talking about potential, we're talking about potential for our babies."

"Who's going to stand up? Who going to stand up? Everyone. Everyone needs to stand up. Everyone from our community, everyone from our police department, and everyone who cares about human life."

The City's Community Relations Commission met with residents in the Woodland Bend area in the later months, as those who are accused continue through the court system, pleading guilty to lesser charges and await sentencing.

The accused triggerman -- 46-year old Overton Fisher -- is jailed on murder charges awaiting trial as soon as this month.
