Main Street Manual for Knoxville in the Works
A summary of the the work done and a preview of what's to come in the Main Street revitalization project was presented to Knoxville alderman Monday night.

Graduate Student Elli Cosky is heading the project for the University of Illinois Extension Office. She briefed council members on the project's first two phases: the TIF redevelopment plan and the Design Charrette.

Cosky says November's Charrette gave her a true feel of what residents like now, and what they want to incorporate to Main Street.

"Something that I really had a takeaway from this was also that the majority of the residents really wanted to bring back that historic downtown feel," she said. "So using the Design Charrette results I've developed a Main Street Design Manual."

The manual is photo friendly and includes the Extension Office's recommendations for five specific areas of Main Street.

Cosky says these are facades, storefront design, materials, signs, and infill. The infill along Main identifies infrastructure concerns, such as scale and compatibility.

The completed project is expected to be complete in April. Next month Cosky will identify prospective businesses for the city and a historical walking tour is scheduled for March.
