2011 Another Unusual Year for Farming
Mother nature both helped and hurt local agriculture in 2011.

That's according to Knox County Farm Bureau President Ted Mottaz. He says early season rains and some dry summer conditions were both good and bad for local crops.

Mottaz tells WGIL yields turned out in some respects to be better than expected.

"There were pockets that brought some problems and some disappointments," he said. "But as far as the soybeans go, I honestly haven't heard a person say they they were disappointed with the soybeans."

Mottaz says a late-season rain really helped soybeans.

"There was a rain about Labor Day, I know in some parts of the county that probably did a lot of good, but still it was a great, pleasant surprise," he Mottaz said. "We had our challenges though. The soybeans were fine to harvest; the corn, down here anyway, oh it was a nightmare."

Mottaz described the corn harvest as not fun and having gone very slowly.

He says not a lot of people would have expected to have two completely different extremes in the growing season.
