Heating Project May Be Split Up
The proposed upgrading of heating and air conditioning systems at Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre may not happen the way the theatre or its governing body thought it might.

The Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday directed theatre president Kate Francis to see if the upgrades can essentially be divided into two, after learning that the theatre's fundraising efforts may not be enough.

Quad Cities-based KJWW is overseeing the theatre's lighting upgrades, and wants to do the rest of the work as well.

Francis told the board the firm isn't sure so far that, even with blocking out a good portion of the summer to get the work done, that it can be.

"From my understanding in cursory conversations with them is that $500,000 likely won't get us 110% replacement of all the equipment," Francis said. "It may not get us the whole enchilada. It could be, it might just be the heating portion. It could be, it might just be the air conditioning."

"But until they get in and do the down and dirty they're just not going to know."

It's not clear when KJWW can report back to the board.

The board did learn Wednesday that the Orpheum's ordinary net income was 88-thousand dollars in the black for last year -- a year in which Francis had projected only a five-hundred dollar profit.

Francis says a huge help to that number was the later-added performances of the "Moscow Ballet" during the Red Carpet Series.
