Galesburg Asking for More Support to Land Caterpillar Plant
The City of Galesburg wants to be the only one in the area trying to get the brand new plant that Peoria-based Caterpillar is looking to build.

A statement issued by the city Friday indicates the city is asking for community and taxing bodies within a five-county area of Galesburg to support Galesburg's effort to bring a planned new Caterpillar plant to the city.

Neither Mayor Sal Garza, City Manager Todd Thompson, nor City Economic Development Director Cesar Suarez responded to WGIL's requests for an interview Friday, but in the press release, Garza says landing the Caterpillar plant should be a local and a regional effort. He says meetings have taken place with such officials, along with area lawmakers and others, to ask for their support to bring the plant to Galebsurg and its possible 1,000 jobs.

Thompson said in the press release that he and economic development department officials are working now to get letters of support from those communities.

It's not clear where the contacts were made, nor in what counties.

Garza says in the statement that "Galesburg and the region are open for business."

The city late last year, without being asked, sent a proposal to Caterpillar for locating in town, and Garza has said Caterpillar has confirmed receiving that.

The new CAT plant could manufacture small tractors and hydraulic excavators.
