Knoxville City Council Concerned About Tourism, Museum Attendance
The Knoxville City Council has discussed more hours of operations for the Knox County historical museum.

Acting Mayor Bob Johnson says it would be nice to utilize the building more often to increase foot traffic.

Alderman Ed Mahar says it doesn't make sense to have a million dollar museum if it's closed and not promoted.

"If we're not going to promote it, it doesn't do us a bit of good," Mahar said. "If you want to attract tourism...and all that's in [the museum], it's very worthwhile for people to travel and see. I think it's a benefit to the city. If it's promoted right, it's a big asset. But the way it sits right now, it's not doing us much good."

Alderman mentioned opening the museum's doors at least 20 hours a week.

Johnson expressed his desire for hiring a full time employee to work at the museum promoting tourism.

He says he'll speak with the historical society and begin developing a budget for a full time tourism position. Johnson proposed paying for a full-time position through use of the city's hotel-motel tax proceeds.
