City Council Again Hears About Political Campaign Spending
A Galesburg man tried again to get the City Council to see things his way -- at least, in terms of a resolution he wants them to pass denouncing corporate influence in political campaigns.

Jerry Ryberg again spoke before aldermen Monday night, again urging passage of a resolution denouncing a two-year-old Supreme Court ruling that essentially has allowed limitless campaign spending by big corporations, claiming that the corporations are really running Congress, not the politicians.

Ryberg told aldermen he gives science demonstrations to kids at Discovery Depot from time to time, but thinks about those kids a lot.

"These are care-free days for these kids, I hope," Ryberg said. "But in a country, which is among the worst of the worst for incoming equality, and where jobs are shipped overseeas because our tax and trade policies encourage that, the future that our Galesburg children face is really grim."

The city in originally rejecting acting on such a measure, told Ryberg the measure doesn't have much to do with Galesburg, but he says it has everything to do with them.

Garza made no comment after Ryberg's remarks this week.

Aldermen Monday night approved two expenditures related to the upgrade of the city's 911 system, and work being done now on the Orpheum Theatre's lighting system, since the city acted as a pass-through agent for the grant that's paying for the lions share of the work.
