Traffic Upgrades for US-150 and IL-41
FIRST REPORTED 3pm 1/24/12 IDOT and the city of Galesburg are locking arms to better equip traffic signals along two heavily traveled roads.

The city council approved a resolution to fund the project, six to two Monday night. Alderman Ken Goad and Russel Flemming declined to support work on U-S 150 and IL-41 because of IDOT's intent to install cameras at two intersections.

Galesburg Public Works Director Larry Cox says the cameras would allow IDOT, the city, and emergency vehicles to monitor traffic.

"It's could also be used by police or fire if there's an accident, or in response to the emergency they can see what lanes are open," he said. "They can see that visually before the emergency or rescue vehicles arrive."

"As far as monitoring the traffic, that would just be for planning purposes, or to know whether the traffic signal timing needs to be changed or extended for a certain leg of the traffic."

Those cameras are expected to be installed at US-150 and Carl Sandburg Drive, and also 150 and Fremont Street.

The resolution designates 10% of the project to be funded through the city's gas tax fund. IDOT will cover the rest of the near $95,000 balance.

The traffic signal modernization project also includes bringing traffic signals up to electric code and improving technologies at pedestrian crosswalks.
