Local Lawmakers Tour Local Agencies
Two local lawmakers got a chance to look at a number of local agencies Tuesday as the group that hosted them urged passage of something that's been tried before.

The Galesburg Community Foundation led State Representative Don Moffitt and State Senator Darin LaHood on a tour of local agencies like the Knox County YMCA, the Orpheum Theatre, and the Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service.

But Foundation Executive Director Josh Gibb wanted the two to think about working on legislation encouraging tax credits for those who contribute to or establish large endowment funds.

Moffitt tells WGIL he likes the measure.

"I see that as potentially generating new jobs, generating new revenue for the state," Moffitt said. "A lot of these capital projects involvee capital infusion, remodeling, construction jobs, which in turn generate state income tax and, of course with purchasing powers, the state sales tax."

"So I think a lot of the things that the foundation could do, would actually generate revenue for the state."

Moffitt says, though, such legislation has been tried and failed before, mostly along political party lines.

The Gilson Republican says if he were to try it again, he'd like to try and get Democratic support on board, and even Democratic legislation sponsors.
