Congressional Candidate Visits College Students
One of the Democratic candidates for Congress in the 17th Congressional District primary election in March had the ears of some potential voters Tuesday.

Cheri Bustos talked to about a dozen students at Knox College. Several, however, were from out of state, while some are from the area.

In any case, Bustos told them she had a conversation with college president Teresa Amott earlier in the day about a potential source of frustration for many of them.

"We talked about Pell-grants, and, you know, they're under attack, not by the democrats, but the Republican Party," she said. "That is very important to a lot of your classmates, they may not be in this room but your president told me firsthand how important that is."

Bustos also talked about potential job retraining and investment she'd like to help implement if elected, how she says her decade in the health care industry and career as a reporter before that makes her attune to what's wrong with the health care system still, and how difficult she thinks it will be for Republican incumbent Bobby Schilling to run again, now that the district has been remapped.

She says it's admittedly not much better for her, but worse for Schilling, since roughly half of the new 17th is new real estate.

Bustos is running against Freeport Mayor George Galurapp and Augustana College's Greg Aguilar in the primary.
