Federal Grant to Benefit Walkers and Bike Riders at Two Galesburg Schools
$250,000 dollars has been awarded to the city of Galesburg to improve transportation routes for walkers and bike riders at two District-205 schools.

It's called the Illinois Safe Route to Schools Grant. Two speed-feedback signs will be installed near Lombard Middle School later this year. And next year, 2,400 feet of new sidewalk will be laid along North Street by Nielson School.

Galesburg's Public Work's Director Larry Cox tells WGIL the award is designed to make traveling to school safer and easier for students on their own.

"We want to provide as safe a route as we can, and provide as much conveinence as we can for students, parents, or their caregivers, and have for them a way to get to school in a safe and easy manner," Cox said. "And we encourage them to walk or ride their bikes to school."

Cox says the Safe Route to Schools Grant is also a part of a federal initiative to encourage healthier lifestyles for students by bike riding or walking to school.

He says the city applied for the grant last fall. The speed-feedback signs and sidewalk installation are two of 229 projects being funded by the federal program statewide.
