Design Ideas Mulled for Elementary School
The Galesburg School District is going ahead with plans for another remodel for another school as part of the first phase of its Master Facilities Plan.

What's called a design charrette meeting was held at Steele Elementary School Monday afternoon. The District has budgeted almost four-and-a-half million dollars for expansion and remodeling at Steele. Teachers filled the meeting with their ideas for what could be improved, and were asked to rank those in order of importance through a dot system.

James Kemper is Design Director for the Peoria-based Dewberry architect firm, and says there are some items teachers picked that to him seem like no-brainers now.

"Eye-catching approach, and transparent, inviting entry, those are two obvious big winners there, on that," Kemper said. "Here, the flexibile multi-purpose room and teaching space, being flexibile, that looks like it has a lot of dots."

Other areas that ranked high included new administrative space, a multi-purpose room, security, and more natural lighting.

A second design charrette meeting will be held next Monday afternoon at Steele.

Meantime, bids for the first project in phase one of Operation Rebuild Achievement -- a remodel of Lombard Middle School -- are expected to be let out about a month from now.
