No Cuts Made to City Budget
What was supposed to be a work session for cutting the City of Galesburg's budget didn't exactly result that way.

After nearly two-hours of discussion, aldermen Monday night agreed that they wanted to keep Lake Storey Beach open at least three days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day if possible, and keep the Oversized Brush Drop-Off site open two days a week as well.

Those two items were to be cut from the city's budget -- though the city did propose leaving the beach open, but banning swimming.

First Ward Alderman Ken Goad held steadfast to what he's repeatedly said for why he wants the beach open.

"Lake Storey Beach has been there longer than I've been alive, and that's a long time," he said. "And I think we need to provide one of the just about only free things we provide to the citizens of Galesburg, as well as people who come in from Peoria, the Quad Cities, and other areas."

The city expressed concern that an expanded geese population at the lake could cause e.coli levels to go up, leaving swimming unsafe.

But aldermen said they wanted to investigate ways of trying to mitigate that.

Aldermen did Monday okay amended terms of a city loan agreement with Intellihot so that it can possibly expand and raise more money.
