Retailer with Local Presence Plans Merger
A retailer with a presence in Warren County plans to merge with another similar firm that, residents say, used to be in Warren County.

Officials with Green Bay-based ShopKo Wednesday announced a merger with Omaha-based Pamida, which they say will create one of the largest retailers focused on serving smaller communities.

ShopKo spokesperson Tara Powers tells WGIL the merger will in no way affect operations of the ShopKo store at U-S 34 and 67 in Monmouth.

"The ShopKo store will stay open," she said. "And really there will be no changes to existing Shopko stores, the changes will happen to the Pamida stores that are converted. And in addition, once the conversions are complete, the company will begin to open brand new stores in new markets in 2013 and beyond."

"It's a pretty aggressive growth plan."

Powers says that's rare for any business -- to merge, and then decide to build even more stores.

She says the Pamida stores will become part of ShopKo as ShopKo Hometown stores, similar to their namesake in terms of items sold.

One of the stores that preceded ShopKo in its Monmouth location was a Pamida.

Most of the Pamida and ShopKo stores are in the Midwest, Mountain, and Pacific Northwest areas of the country.
