Library Needs a Real Estate Agent
The Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees is moving forward with property acquisition efforts as they work toward building a new library.

The board Thursday voted to approve sending out a request for proposals from real estate agents that can help them purchase properties in the area of the Super 8 on West Main Street, so that they can build a new library there.

But there are some who still believe that the library should be built on the site of the former OT Johnson's property on East Main Street, like board member Craig Conolly.

"The OT Johnson building, or site, did not get (more consideration), we had one meeting," he said. "It was never eliminated from consideration, we simply stated it was no longer the priority. It was not the priority, the priority was this."

But the board said they decided long before now that the OT site couldn't be used -- for, among other reason, its size, and the lack of adequate parking.

The request for proposals is expected to be on the Galesburg Public Library's website, and are likely to be submitted later this month in advance of the board's February meeting.

The board hopes to have the proposals back later this month, in time for a vote at their February meeting.
