Sheley Murder Case Set for Appeal
The Knox County murder case involving accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley is now officially heading toward appeal.

Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin filed Thursday in Knox County Circuit Court, what's called a "Notice of Filing a Notice of Appeal."

That sets up the case going to the 3rd District Appellate Court in Ottawa, and will allow Sheley to be appointed an appellate defender to take over for Karlin.

Sheley was convicted in September of murder for the death of 65-year old Ronald Randall, and was sentenced to life in November.

A number of other documents were also filed in the case this week.

The formal order that denied a motion to reconsider the life sentence was officially filed Wednesdayafter being denied last month.

Also, Circuit Judge James Stewart Wednesday signed off on another $2,500 in payments to be made to Karlin for his services.

Karlin has said the $120 per hour rate he charged Knox County is significantly less than his normal rate through the Alcorn Karlin law firm.

More sealed and unsealed transcripts and other documents were ordered to be sent to the Appellate Court this week as well.

Sheley allegedly killed eight people in two states. He's awaiting trial in Whiteside County for the first of five deaths allegedly committed there -- that of 93-year old Russell Reed of Sterling.
