Lawmaker: Budget Big in 2011
One of the bigger state issues of 2011 -- outside of a certain former governor being convicted of corruption and sentenced to prison -- continued to be the state budget.

And State Representative Don Moffitt says that issue took a big step forward during the year, when lawmakers passed the first balanced state budget in years.

Moffitt tells the WGIL Morning News the state might do better than the $33.2 billion in revenue the budget is based on.

"We do think that's a conservative estimate; we do think we will have slightly more revenue than that, which is a good thing to have, and apply that towards [the budget] deficit," Moffitt said. "The way the revenue is coming in now, it looks like it will be a little more than 33.2, which is good news. That doesn't mean we can drop our guard. It doesn't mean we can let down on our efforts to keep reducing that deficit."

The Gilson Republican says that total could end up being $300 million addional or more will end up coming in. But he says it's money that can't be spent yet.

He says it's been at least 10 years since a balanced budget was passed, and it wasn't easy.
