Alderman Pedaling for Bike Paths in Galesburg
One Galesburg Alderman says the current bike signs in the city aren't inviting, and often present dangerous cycling conditions.

7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin is pioneering a movement to get the public's support behind an initiative to improve the city's bike trails.

He tells the WGIL Evening News the Galesburg Bicycle Advisory Group was formed to do just that, enhance the country's second most popular outdoor sport.

"Bicycling is a great activity for all ages," Karlin said. "It's an activity that helps us save money, helps us deal with issues of the environment to global warming, it's great exercise."

"Everyone is interested and thinks that we can make a great deal improvement. So the idea of the group is not just to grow it, although that is going to happen," he said. "It's to demonstrate the interest that's already there."

Karlin is encouraging all who are interested in planning better equipped bike paths to show up at Q's Cafe, Saturday at 1pm.

After the planning phase, he says the Bicycle Advisory Group can look to outside sources for funding. Karlin says the group can apply for private funding because it is a separate advocacy group.

According to Karlin, public support will show city officials not all of Galesburg's challenges must go through city hall.
