Knox County Sheriffs' Work not Reflective of Statewide Citation Figures
A study released by the Chicago Tribune this week indicates traffic stops and tickets issued dipped across the state in 2010.

Knox County Sheriff David Clague tells WGIL this may have translated into more motor vehicle accidents in Illinois.

"If the tickets remain the same every year, the number of crashes probably will tend go down," he said. "If the tickets are reduced, I think the traffic crashes increase."

The Tribune analyzed data from 2008 to 2010, finding that citations were down 11% and traffic stops were down 6% statewide.

Clague says that's not the case in Knox County. He tells WGIL one shift of Sheriffs Deputy patrols has amassed 800 citations a year.

"That has increased over the last four years that I've been in office," Clague said. "Where shortly after taking office, I think we were probably, overall as a department, probably writing 100 citations a year. And now, obviously (there's an increase) with one shift writing close to 800."

Clague says written warnings have increased at consistent pace with moving citations.

According to the Chicago Tribune, warnings were up 43% in 2010.
