How a Big Manufacturer could Affect Local Economic Development
So what happens if a major manufacturer with a yellow-based logo does decide to build its next plant in Galesburg? The City's economic developer says from his standpoint, his office will just keep on keeping on.

City Economic Development Cesar Suarez was posted with what impact could Caterpillar have on local economic development efforts.

Suarez tells WGIL economic development is about quality of life, and perhaps some focus would shift on making things even better than they could be for residents.

"There's so many ways in which you can improve the quality of life for our residents," Suarez said. "You look at tourism, like the National Railroad Hall of Fame is one area to go. You look at retail development as well, housing development, social development, environmental."

So really wherever it is to bill quality of life is where you want to focus at. Because ultimately, we are building our community for the 21st century."

Suarez says some of the city's efforts to enhance small business and businesses that want to be "green" would continue unabated, because there will always be a need for innovation and growth in that sector.

He says Caterpillar would change the dynamic of the community, and would also provide opportunities for suppliers, workforce development, and other things.
