Building Committee Augments GHS Athletic Plans
The Galesburg School Board Building Committee has signed off on plans for athletic renovations and additions at Galesburg High School, but not before making an important change.

The Building Committee opted for the original suggestion of a 210-foot wide soccer field, versus a narrower 165-foot wide field in an attempt to move various track and field events inside the football stadium.

Now-former District205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill spoke at the meeting, receiving special permission to do so from the state Teachers' Retirement System so his benefits are not altered.

Cahill says leaving the bigger soccer field in play, even if the district continues to use the nearby Knox County YMCA Soccer Complex, is a good thing, considering the growing national and local popularity of soccer.

'I would argue very strongly that for the long term for the parents of soccer players in the next generation are going to come back and say what were they thinking, why did they not plan."

Cahill was referring to the potential of the 165-foot soccer field.

Cahill also expressed some other concerns, specifically about changes that have been made in proposed improved football stadium seating.

Track and field events will still likely be moved inside the football stadium as well.

The Galesburg School Board will vote on the full proposal -- part of the overall Master Facilities Plan -- Monday night.
