Finance Committee Approves Health Department Budget
FIRST REPORTED 7:10 PM 1/11/2013 The Knox County Finance Committee held a special meeting Friday night.

The committee wanted to get the ball rolling on the Knox County Health Department's revised 2013 budget.

The approval process was stalled in recent weeks after grant funding needed to be more transparently accounted for.

The Health Department met last night to approve the new 3.4-million dollar budget - which will buy equipment and cover state obligations among other items.

County Board Chair Greg Bacon tells WGIL he had a meeting with the Health Department last week to tell them he liked how the budget looked.

"There was no appropriations numbers before that were associated with the grant, where it was going to go," says Bacon. "Now the lumps of money are broken down into various appropriations, where it's going to be moved to."

The item was approved unanimously and without much discussion.

The measure now goes to the full board for approval. Problems with the budget approval process are not expected.

Thursday night, Health Board President Jackie Turner told WGIL they should have been more proactive.

"There was nothing we could have done because we didn't know we were going to receive these funds," said Turner. "You know how that goes: you sort of win some money and then all of a sudden it's like 'Okay where do I put it at?' "

Approval of the budget by the finance committee will now allow the Health Department to move forward with the budget processes.
