Demolition of Another Downtown Abingdon Building Closer
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 1/14/13 The City of Abingdon will soon go ahead with the demolition of another downtown building, now that aldermen have okayed who will be doing the work.

Aldermen recently approved a nearly $55,000 bid from Brown Excavating to pay for the work to be done on the former bank building on Main Street around the corner from City Hall. Aldermen were surprised to learn the variety of costs of the five bids, given that the highest bid was over three-times the amount of the lowest responsible bid.

City Engineer Neil Smith says the bid approved was for only one phase of the work that ultimately will be needed.

"Takes everything above ground down to about a foot below ground and cleans the whole out and then you have to come in and do your asbestos testing and find somebody to fill it in would be the next two phases."

One Abingdon alderman was concerned that a bid opening was held on the project and he wasn't notified. That's despite the fact that the bid opening and solicitation process was discussed at length at several city council meetings prior to last week.

Mayor Roger Stegall says he's pleased with the best bid received for the project, and pleased that the downtown demolition project is continuing.
