| College, Faculty Reach Bargaining Agreement |
After filing an intent to strike notice with the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board, the college and faculty at Spoon River College have reached a tentative agreement.
According to a press release, the teachers at Spoon River College will look over documents at their Friday meeting in order to ratify the agreement.
Nine hours of negotiating with the help of a federal mediator resulted in the agreement.
Picketers reportedly showed up to the bargaining session on Tuesday with signs to demand a fair contract.
College President Curt Oldfield tells WGIL he think's the agreement is great.
"That's the ultimate goal of any negotiations is that both parties walk away achieving what they were hoping to achieve for who they were representing and I feel like having us have this agreement that's mutually beneficial between both parties is the ultimate goal of the negotiations process."
Nearly 200 people liked a Facebook page the educators set up to provide information on the situation.
The SRCFA first sent out a demand to bargain back in December of 2011 and after months of failed negotiations, filed an intent to strike notice.
SRCFA President Stacy Swanson tells WGIL she thinks the agreement will be acceptable to the rest of the members.
"Certainly in this you know economic times we're not looking too reach an agreement where it would put a burden on the tax payers, so with that in mind I think that when everybody in the community sees the agreement that they will feel it's a fair agreement."
Swanson said she couldn't comment specifically on what the agreement entails.
The items being bargained over stem from issues concerning salary, insurance, and professional advancement. |
