After months of declines, statistics supplied by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicate Knox County's jobless average in December went up sharply to 8.5%, from a rate the month before of 7.8%.

In all of the county, almost 2,200 residents are listed as unemployed, up about 150 from the month prior.

In just the City of Galesburg, the jobless average went up four-tenths of a point to 8.6%. Over 1,200 are jobless in Galesburg according to the unemployment data, up about 30.

With a Warren County jobless average listed at an even 7% for December, up about four-tenths, that puts the the state's combined Galesburg-area Unemployment rate at 8.1% for December.

That rate is a tenth of a point lower than the year ago, which the state says is the 11th consecutive month the rate was equal to or below the year-ago level.
