Christmas Tree Drop-off Deadline Nearing
If one of your New Year's resolutions is to not wait until April to get your Christmas tree down for the year, and it's a natural tree, then the city can help you.

The city's longtime initiative of having a site where residents can take their undecorated non-artificial Christmas trees continues, but only for a limited time.

The drop-off site is once again this year at the Lowe's parking lot on Carl Sandburg Drive, but ends tomorrow.

Galesburg Associate Planner Julie Main tells WGIL there's a simple reason for having a Christmas tree drop-off site.

"The Christmas tree drop-off program came about with trying to save landfill space and Christmas tree recycling has been popular since the early 1990's and so a program was developed where they go to our over-sized brush drop-off facility and are turned into mulch," says Main.

Main says should you want to take your Christmas tree to the Lowe's parking lot, make sure all the decorations -- especially tinsel -- are off of it. Frocked Christmas trees are also not accepted.

If you can't get your Christmas tree to the drop-off site, Main says trees can still be collected at the curb on your normal garbage day.
