Economic Development, Sidewalks on Galesburg City Council Agenda
There apparently won't be much time for talking about the City of Galesburg's economic development priorities at Monday night's Galesburg City Council meeting.

Aldermen are scheduled to have their third consecutive work session on economic development prior to the regular council meeting -- first scheduled so that aldermen could prioritize economic development efforts ahead of the city's termination of its contract with the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association in mid-March.

Unlike the lengthy discussions at the last two meetings, only 30 minutes has been scheduled for Monday night's session, with a vast majority of a list of issues put together in January left to go.

During the regular meeting, aldermen will consider the proposed agreement to add sidewalks around Gale Elementary School as part of the federal Safe Routes to School Program.

If approved, the city would receive all $268,000 needed for the project from the federal government, but administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Despite the free money and what city officials say is enhanced safety, residents of the Northland Subdivision claim the sidewalks are neither wanted nor needed.

The Galesburg City Council meets starting with the work session at 7:00 inside Council Chambers at City Hall.
