Quinn Ordering State Spending Cuts
Another governor -- another round of proposed "savings." Gov. Pat Quinn has announced that he's instituting savings measures -- effective immediately -- including one-percent cuts to agency budgets, limits in out-of-state travel, and cutting back on contracts with outside entities. Quinn thinks the moves will save the state hundreds of millions of dollars, but won't go into detail.

Quinn spent some time Tuesday afternoon meeting with House Democrats in a closed-door caucus meeting. House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) heaped praise on Quinn for his accessibility, but jokes about the reputation of a Democrat-controlled state Capitol, describing the meeting as "the usual joyous gathering of Democrats." He also laughed that everybody sang kumbaya.

The budget situation is precarious, with state Comptroller Dan Hynes estimating that the state will see a nine-billion dollar deficit over the course of the next nearly year-and-a-half.
