Obama: Stimulus Will Help Caterpillar and Rest of Economy
President Obama says he hopes both parties in Congress will rally behind emergency economic legislation as votes near in the House and Senate.

The president declared Thursday in East Peoria that the $789 billion stimulus plan will unleash a wave of construction, innovation and job growth once he signs it into law. Congressional leaders are ironing out the final details of the plan after negotiators came to terms on Wednesday.

Obama spoke on a plant floor of Caterpillar Inc., the heavy equipment manufacturer that has announced layoffs of more than 22,000 jobs because of sliding demand.

Obama said the company would rehire some of the workers when the economic bill becomes law and predicted other companies will have similar stories.

Obama will keynote an address at the annual Abraham Lincoln Birthday celebration in Springfield Thursday night.
