Special Obama License Plates Available
Illinois is issuing license plates to honor President Obama.

The special event plates bear a picture of the president, and the words "Illinois Salutes President Barack Obama." They're selling for $50 a pair, with $40 of that fee to benefit the Illinois Library Association.

Secretary of State Jesse White expects the plates to be big sellers. He unveiled them Friday at the Chicago Auto Show, running through Feb. 21. The plates are being sold at the Auto Show, and at www.ila.org/obama.

The plates can actually be used on cars from Feb. 17-April 17. Then owners can keep them as souvenirs. White says he expects robust out-of-state sales too. Out-of-state sales will be as souvenirs only, and will start upon the expiration of the plates, April 17.

Bob Doyle, executive director of the Illinois Library Association, says his group was thinking about using a license plate as a fund-raiser, and after the election figured that a special event plate honoring Obama would be a bigger seller than just library support.

Doyle says the association will use the proceeds to sustain the I-READ program, a summer reading program for school children.
