Local Official Talks Stimulus Package
The new chairman of the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association says there seems to be a lot of good that will come out of the economic stimulus bill that President Barack Obama will sign Tuesday, but he also says it makes one pretty big assumption.

GREDA Chairman, and Carl Sandburg College President Tom Schmidt says, he does believe the stimulus bill will spur employment and economic development in some areas -- similar, he says, to when the interstate highway system was first formed and how all kinds of opportunities cropped up from that.

But Schmidt tells WGIL, however, the stimulus bill assumes that the U.S. is a capitalist society.

"Ultimately, it will be the private entrepreneur that has a private interest of improving their life -- that is when you add one plus one plus three down the street, that's what 80 to 90 percent of the jobs in this country are provided by small entrepreneurs."

Schmidt says that's why he's glad to hear that the Galesburg City Council is honoring entrepreneurship Monday night through a mayoral proclamation, and is setting up a grant program to help businesses provide new and innovative opportunities.

He says GREDA is also supporting the city's efforts to create what is essentially a road map toward economic development.
