Burris Tries to Explain Changing Testimony
U.S. Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) made an interesting distinction today to explain why his evolving testimony is difficult to reconcile.

Burris first said in an affidavit January 5th that he had no contact with any associates of ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich regarding appointment to the Senate. He then let on contact with former chief of staff Lon Monk in testimony before the Illinois House Impeachment Committee on January 8th. In an amended affidavit filed February 5th, he acknowledged further contact with the ex-governor's associates, including his brother Robert Blagojevich, who asked him to raise money for Rod Blagojevich,

Burris is making a distinction between contacts regarding "the Senate seat" and "the appointment," saying that he told everyone who would listen that he was interested in the Senate seat, but he had no serious response until the governor's lawyer called him about "the appointment" on December 28th.

"I did not have conversation about my appointment - now I'm talking about actually being appointed - with anyone other than the governor's attorney," Burris said today in an appearance before the City Club of Chicago.

Burris said he welcomes investigations by the state's attorney in Sangamon County and the Senate Ethics panel.
