Ameren Looks for Rate Hike; CUB Calls it "Disturbing"
Ameren customers could see a rate hike in 2010. Ameren CEO Gary Rainwater says the utility plans to ask the Illinois Commerce Commission for a rate hike to cover rising costs.

Ameren spokesman Leigh Morris says the increased delivery charges are needed to maintain power lines and other infrastructure. He says it's not a new issue and Ameren has been talking about a hike for quite some time. He says consumers would rather have many small rate hikes than a one time large rate hike.

Under state law the Illinois Commerce Commission decides if a utility can raise prices. Last year the ICC granted Ameren a rate hike of $161 million, less than the $200 million Ameren was seeking.

Jim Chilsen, spokesman with the Citizens Utility Board, says this is disturbing news from Ameren. He says the last thing consumers need in this tight economy is an increase in their utility bills.

Chilsen says CUB is currently appealing last year's rate hike and will fight the next one.
