Republicans Renew Special Election Call
Illinois House and Senate Republicans are renewing their call for a special election, now and forever, to put U.S. senators in vacant seats. State law currently requires an appointment by the governor.

Such a call for a special election was pushed aside by ruling Democrats. But Republicans hope the increased fervor over appointed U.S. Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) and his conflicting testimony, explanations, and affidavits about fundraising for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich will force Democrats to put the issue up for a vote. State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) says a special election is the only way to help fix Illinois' "tattered reputation."

The Republican lawmakers hope Democrats will move an existing measure to permanently change the way Illinois fills vacant U.S. Senate seats, and plan to add a provision to hold elections this spring to replace Burris. Their preferred dates are April 7 for a primary election, and May 26 for a general election.
