Superintendent: Knoxville Elementary School Needs to Expand
The Superintendent of the Knoxville School District says one way or another, Mabel Woolsey Elementary School has to expand.

Larry Carlton told the District-202 School Board Wednesday night a surprising number of students are currently enrolled in kindergarten at the school -- a number nearing one-hundred -- and as those students move into first grade next year, that's going to put classroom space at a premium while keeping class sizes at a manageable level -- around 20 students per class in most cases, with 15 classrooms.

Carlton says he'd like to see the district add a couple of either portable or modular classrooms on to the property, which could be an expensive proposition. "Two classrooms, with bathrooms, $131,000, plus setup, plus delivery," Carlton said. "We'd look at two of those for four classrooms, about $350,000. I looked at the modulars, basically pouring in a slab and then they bring in the walls pre-built. That's running about $95 a square foot. For my easy math, at $100 a square foot, it was 70 (feet) by 70 (feet), (it would cost) $490,000."

Carlton says the project could be paid for in much the same way the district has paid the last ten years for another project the district undertook -- using debt certificates. Carlton says the district could just keep doing that, now that the 1999 project will be paid off.

He says he wants something ready to go for fall, but the school board will talk about it more during a special meeting March fourth.
