Knoxville Considering Involvement in Freshman Academy
The superintendent of the Knoxville School District says he likes a program put on by a nearby Regional School District so much, he wants to be a part of it.

Larry Carlton told the District-202 Board Wednesday night he wants students about to become Freshmen to take part in a summer Freshman Academy hosted by the Warren/Henderson/Mercer Regional Superintendent of Schools at Monmouth College.

Carlton says he believes the program will really help those students get ready for high school. "We believe that it would be a great opportunity for our young people coming in to high school to take advantage of this," Carlton said. "They would work on math, reading, and writing skills for six weeks. Hopefully they'll get a good start as a freshman coming in."

As of right now, Carlton says High School Principal Mike Kemmer is looking at having two to six incoming Freshman take part in the non-mandatory Academy, at a start-up cost of $5,500, then $500 per student plus transportation.

The six-week program, according to the Warren/Henderson/Mercer R.O.E., is targeted at students who might not have done as well as their peers on the ACT/Explore tests, and who otherwise would have difficulty with the high school curriculum.

The proposal will be brought before the school board at a later date.
