Hare Calls for Burris to Resign
A local congressman says he's disappointed in the latest revelations surrounding new U.S. Senator Roland Burris.

17th District Democrat Phil Hare says Roland Burris must either have selective amnesia or just wasn't being honest with the Illinois House Impeachment Committee when he decided to issue an affidavit stating he had indeed been solicited for funds by ousted Governor Rod Blagojevich's campaign.

Speaking Wednesday in Galesburg, Hare said as far he is concerned, Burris broke the law.

"These are important jobs, but no more important than anybody here, and you have to live by the law," Hare said.

"If you go before in a court and raise your hand and swear to tell the truth and you lie, that's considered to be perjury. I listened to what the senator (Burris) had to say, and the people of this state deserve better."

Hare is one of a number of lawmakers who are now calling for Burris to resign amid the new allegations.

He says he thought even though Burris was appointed by Blagojevich, he thought the state would now be able to move ahead, and it can't.

Hare said, "we've got to clean this place up," and he's calling on state lawmakers to pass tough ethics laws.

Hare repeated his call for Burris to resign during an appearance Friday morning on CNN.
