$250K in Communication Upgrades Approved by City Council
The Galesburg City Council apparently will allow the movement toward the essential rewiring of the city's internet and communications lines.

Aldermen during a special meeting Monday morning voted to approve $250,000 worth of bids for new wires, and new switching equipment, that will be installed in all city-owned buildings.

The vote had been tabled last Monday (February 16), partly after aldermen wondered if the work could be included in the city's list of economic stimulus "shovel-ready" projects, but later learned it can't be.

City Manager Dane Bragg tells WGIL the work will help employees at various city departments essentially better talk to each other. "They are designed to increase our bandwidth and connectivity between city facilities," Bragg said, "and also to improve redundancy of network services among the facilities -- meaning that we'll be able to patch and keep networks alive among the facilities in case one goes down for some reason."

Bragg says the move is being done in order to help facilitate a planned conversion of the city's telephone systems to Voice-Over Internet Protocol later this year.

The communication line conversion, to be done by Davenport-based Kohler Electric, is expected to be complete in three-to-four months.
