"2 Million Minutes" Discussed at CSC
A film to raise awareness of the world we're living in, a call for understanding the world that's unfolding, and to stimulate discussion. Those we the reasons behind a movie shown Monday night at Carl Sandburg College and for the panel discussion of community and education administrators that followed.

A theatre full of area residents were on hand for a viewing of the documentary "2 Million Minutes" whose focus was on the cultural differences and the challenges of high school students in India, China, and the United States.

After the film was shown a panel discussion took place on the reactions of educators and members of the student body, as well as how one state legislator felt about what they had seen. One of the panel's members, Darrell Clevidence, Associate Dean of Math and Science at CSC, seemed to stress the low value of science and math in our education process. He told the audience, that our society places more influence on athletes and not enough influence on education.

"It's very easy to be cynical about this, or a culture that, maybe, pays $25 million to the third baseman of the Yankees," Clevidence said, "but at the same time, ignores the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin."

The film's makers focused on the title because they believed there were 2 million minutes from a students junior high graduation until their high school graduation and how the choices and the direction the students went in, would affect their lives.

Most of the panel seemed to conclude, more money for education was needed to keep up with the standards of other countries, as well as more parental and family involvement to keep students motivated and driven to reach their goals.
