Knoxville Voters to Cast Ballots at Fairgrounds Starting in April
Some Knox County voters will have a new polling place in April's consolidated election.

The Knox County Board Wednesday night voted in favor of moving polling places in Knoxville from the old courthouse and the high school to a more accessible, more convenient location. Knoxville voters will now cast their ballots at the Knox County Fairground Munson Building.

Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson says, voting at the old courthouse in Knoxville was congested, especially when there are times of high voter turn out. Erickson tells WGIL, moving the polling places to a centralized location can help keep the overall price of having the election down. "I can get all four of my polling places in (the Munson building) with plenty of room," Ericson said. "They won't be up and over each other, and it will be a lot easier. Basically, it's a concept called 'clustering.' That's a concept that a lot of the bigger communities are going to -- consolidating a lot of their precincts and getting them into one centralized location for equipment costs and personnel costs, and a variety of other issues."

The Knox County Fairgrounds' Munson Building, Erickson says, is a big open building, with plenty of room and is also accessible for those in wheelchairs. The new polling place will help those wheelchair bound not feel like they are crowed together and allows for more flexibility of space, especially with new, different types of polling machines.

Erickson says they don't like to move polling places if they have to, but having at least a consolidated election in the new polling place first, allows them to work out any of the kinks they encounter in time for a major election like the one in 2012.
