Evaluation to be Done on Accused OxyContin Thief
A Galesburg man accused of stealing a prescription painkiller from a local drug store will have to undergo an evaluation before any further proceedings can commence in his case.

55-year old Steven Jones was in Knox County Circuit Court Wednesday for a motion hearing on felony charges of Robbery and Armed Robbery.

Jones allegedly went to the pharmacy at the Walgreens store on Fremont and Henderson Streets last May 30th, displaying a knife asking for all the OxyContin pills the store had, but then jumping the counter when the pharmacist on duty walked away. Jones fled the scene with approximately 160 OxyContin pills, but was arrested later at a Duval Street home.

Knox County Circuit Court Judge James Stewart Wednesday okayed a mental health exam being done on Jones. Public Defender Jim Harrell claims that Jones could have been insane at the time of the alleged robbery. But if Jones is found fit, the state could possibly a motion to recoup the costs of the exam.

Jones was scheduled to have a jury trial last month, but later waived that and asked for a bench trial. The next hearing date in the case has yet to be set.
