Former Lawmaker Supports Special Election
Former state senator Dawn Clark Netsch says a special election should have been held to fill the U.S. Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama.

Speaking with reporters in Chicago, Netsch talked about Attorney General Lisa Madigan's opinion on holding a special election to replace U.S. Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL). Madigan has given Republicans the OK to pursue a special election, saying there's nothing in the U.S or state constitutions to prohibit replacing Burris through special election.

Netsch says the 17th amendment clears the way for such a move, but reiterated that the state wouldn't be in this mess if a special election were held in the first place.

Some Democrats question how the state would afford the $50 million price tag to hold a special election, but Republicans say it could cost as little at $15 million if held this spring.

Burris is accused of not being entirely truthful to a House committee that drafted articles of then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich's impeachment.
