| Officials Talk Rural Transit in Williamsfield |
A community group gathered together in order to organize needs to get public transportation to and from rural areas. The group met Thursday morning at the American Legion in Williamsfield to discuss results of a rural transit survey and hear from residents interested in bringing some type of rural transportation to their area.
Dawn Piper, transit coordination specialist with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs and the Rural Transit Center at Western Illinois University, lead the discussion in which she shared some survey results that were received by the group from residents in Knox County. A majority of the respondents expressed the need for a form of transit from rural areas to cities such as Galesburg, the Quad Cities and Iowa City.
Piper tells WGIL, rural transit throughout the area could help get residents to a variety of places. "There are some people who are trying to get their children to sports activities, seniors needing to go to...the nursing home to visit their spouse, or, maybe, to a long-term care facility," Piper said.
Another participant in the meeting, Al Smith, said it's taken over a year's worth of work for this third phase of the project. They move these kind of informational meetings to different parts of the area as a way to get people involved by hearing what they would like from the rural transit system. He says it's important that residents in rural areas to participate, so the group can design a system that could most benefit users. |
