Community Colleges Benefitting from Economic Slowdown
One place that's getting more business these days is your local community college. The Illinois Community College Board reports spring enrollment is a record in terms of FTE - full-time equivalency. That's the total number of credit hours taken divided by the traditional full-time load of fifteen. That's almost 203-thousand, surpassing a record set five years ago.

The total of actual students is more than 362-thousand, not a record but still up three percent from spring a year ago.

Spokesman Steve Morse says the economy is driving enrollment up for two reasons: community college, whose credits transfer easily, is cheaper than a four-year college; and people who have already been in the workforce are coming to learn new skills.
