Couple Tells Legislator Their Unemployment Tale
A woman who lost her job just the night before; a father of three who was on workman's compensation only to have no job to go back to after his injury. Those were a couple of people telling their stories to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) at a state unemployment office just blocks from the Capitol. Durbin says he wanted to see first-hand the "first casualties" of the economic downturn.

He did bring a couple of pieces of good news: one is a 25-dollar-per-week increase in payments, and another is to subsidize continued health benefits - "to pick up 2/3 of the cost of COBRA for six-to-nine months."

"That means that we can keep these folks and their kids on health insurance after they're unemployed," Durbin said.
