Farms Increase, Land Decreases in Illinois
The 2007 census for agriculture shows an increase in the number of farms in Illinois. The census shows the number of farms in the state grew 5 percent - from over 73-thousand in 2002 to nearly 77-thousand in 2007. Despite in increase in the number of farms, Illinois lost over half a million acres in farmland over the past five years.

USDA crop statistician Mark Schleusener says the 2007 census shows the number of farms in Illinois decreasing and says the census also looks at the different crops grown in each state.

Schleusener says, "Illinois is big time in agriculture for several things. We are the number one producing state in the country. For instance, if you combined together sales of corn and soybeans and wheat and oats, Illinois is the number one state in the nation."

Statistics from the 2007 census shows that Illinois remains the national leader in sales of grains, oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas, and also in pumpkin acreage. Illinois also has the most horseradish acres and is fourth in the nation in hog and pig sales and inventory.
