Galesburg Schools on Honor Roll
Administrators in the Galesburg School District are thrilled with again being included in the Illinois Honor Roll of schools, but also point out that the awards don't tell the district's whole story.

Cook, King, Nielson, and Steele Schools have been honored with the State Board of Education's honor roll award for Spotlight Schools -- based on whether or not the schools make Adequate Yearly Progress under the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, and how many of those students are passing state standardized tests. And, for the first time, the District has received an Academic Excellence Award for Gale School -- because at least 90-percent of students have met or exceeded state standards.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Joel Estes, tells W-G-I-L while it's easy to judge a school on test scores alone, he doesn't do that.

Estes says, "The high test scores aren't the target. The high test scores are a symptom of really good things going on acedemically in the schools and it really speaks volumes about the hard work that our boys and girls are doing in the schools, and the hard work of the staff, and the teachers in the classrooms that, day after day, are there for the children giving great instruction."

Also in the area, Mabel Woolsey Elementary School in Knoxville, and ROWVA West Elementary School also won the Academic Excellence Award.

Abingdon Middle School, Lincoln Intermediate School in Monmouth, and Monmouth-Roseville Junior High School won the Spotlight Award, and Williamsfield Middle School won an Academic Improvement Award.
