Illinois Legislature Forms Own Ethics Panel
State lawmakers will have a new ethics committee in their midst. Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) are announcing plans for a 16-member joint legislative committee that will focus on cleaning up state government and politics.

Gov. Pat Quinn's reform commission, begun while he was still lieutenant governor, is now part of the governor's office and will have its second meeting Thursday. Cullerton insists that Quinn's commission and the legislative committee are not in competition, but will work together. Cullerton believes a new law will be passed this year because of the Rod Blagojevich impeachment and conviction.

Cullerton says two of his priorities are opening inspector general reports that detail employee discipline and firings, and clamping down on who profits from retirement fund contracts.
