Knox College Students Talk Environment With Hare
Students of a local college and a local congressman have been able to discuss their environmental concerns in an eco-friendly way. Knox College students gathered Wednesday on campus to hear from and ask questions to 17th District Congressman Phil Hare on issues ranging from local wind energy to foreign oil dependance.

The students were involved in the video conference call as part of the National Teach-In on Global Warming Solutions where members of Congress from around the county engaged a dialogue with students from their districts. Kathleen Beeson, a Knox College student, says it was, in her words, really cool for Hare to take time from his schedule and meet with students to discuss the environment. Beeson tells WGIL she had a couple issues she wanted Hare to talk about.

"I'm actually really concerned with pesticides and chemicals being sprayed, and effects on human health," Beeson said. "Public transportation, I also think, is one of the most basic things we could change."

The teleconference was facilitated by Knox Professor Peter Schwartzman, chair of the environmental studies department, who says it was a great opportunity for students to see who represents them in Congress and for a congressman to see future leaders of the country that attended the conference.

Schwartzman says there are a number of new initiatives coming from all over the country and wished Hare would get into greater detail such as timetables instead of speaking in a more general sense.
