Black Bear Found, Captured in Bureau County
A black bear has been discovered and removed from Bureau County.

Conservation officers have been on the lookout for the bear since June 2008, when it was seen in the Sheffield area. Capt. Greg Hunter of the Conservation Police district in Sterling, says they detailed an officer to the search now, figuring this would be a good time to catch it, since the bear could be found in a state of hibernation, and they could shoot it with tranquilizer in a safe location.

The bear was discovered Tuesday in the Neponset area, tranquilized and taken to a facility in Southern Illinois that is licensed to possess bears. Hunter says the bear was removed for safety reasons, though there had not been any bad bear-vs.-human encounters.

Hunter says the bear almost surely was not a wild bear, but escaped or had been released from captivity.
